Gringo Cocktail Party

Well, we went to our 2nd gringo party and this time we weren't the youngest people there by 30 years! There are apparently hundreds of expats in the area, but they are almost all retired. So not only do we stand out around town, but we also stand out at the gringo parties!

We ended up having fun and realized that we actually kind of like going to these. There is always someone with a refreshing dose of cynicism that we have come to believe is rather unique to Americans. That doesn't sound like much of a compliment, but being a cynical you-know-what myself, I think we just might be able to take pride in it.

It's kind of like these HILARIOUS and (I think) quite brilliant TV commercials that a fast food chain in South Africa put together. When I watched these I thought "Wow, probably only in South Africa would these be even remotely acceptable to post on tv." It's something unique and though some will find it offensive or even just rough around the edges, Nathan and I appreciated the brutal honesty and courage it took to post these for worldwide broadcast. So, maybe we should just embrace the cynicism that some can be so open with :)

Here's the latest 'Nando's' SA advertisement and the one we like most.

This advertisement was so offensive to followers of the nearby dictator Mugabe that Nando's employees were being threatened, so they have since de-aired the commercial. Hopefully it stays on You Tube!
