Nathan's Latest Production
Black and White Print. No Title. March 2012
He's been slaving away carving the linoleum block for this for the last week or so and not only did he finish it yesterday, but he was able to make several prints!

These two were printed on handmade paper that we found here in Patzcuaro. They were made in a small little pueblo a couple hours outside of Mexico City.  Perfect for printing!

A Pizza and Strawberry Shortcake Day

With the abundance of decadent and affordable strawberries in the mercado lately (roughly 2 pounds for a dollar), I have been dying to make one of my favorite American Desserts: Strawberry Shortcake!

BUT, I don't like that spongy shortcake that I grew up with. So I make mine with a version of shortbread. Since I used wheat flour and the heavy cream I bought was actually un-whipped cool whip (Yuck), they came out more like scones.

Which was totally fine by me. Delicious scones they were! I like how non-sweet they are compared to the strawberries and their crumbly nature was an added bonus.

Soo....we were starving and since I hadn't even started the pizzas, I thought it would be ok to share a bowl with Nathan before dinner.  But then it was soo good he ate a whole other one all to himself...

Well, dinner should be eaten at some point. So I started the pizza dough. It was the easiest thing ever to make, but it has to be thought out in advance to allow time for the dough to rise.

The recipe came from one of the baking blogs that I regularly consult called "Farmgirl Fare" found here. Next up are Meyer Lemon Scones (since I can't fine regular lemons here!)
While the pizza was rising I carmelized onions and garlic and roasted potatoes for the topping. I had already made pesto sauce and since I had a whole two hours to kill, I decided to put my newly found treasure to use: dijon mustard! So, I threw together a tangy balsamic dijon dressing with some garlic, lemon, olive oil and water. It's quick and easy and satisfies my craving for salad dressing down here since all the brands available to us are super generic and full of who knows what..

Finally, the dough was ready to work with.

Everything was ready and all I had to do was roll the dough and throw the pizza together. I rolled another newly found treasure into the crust of the dough (parmesan!!! Yesssss) and 20 minutes later we were eating!

I don't exactly have proper baking tools down here, but the pizzas still came out delicious!

The next pizza will include homemade sun-dried tomatoes!
This is my first stab at them, so if they turn out well I will quadruple the quantity :)

Vanilla Pudding
 Back away from the box!!

Warm homemade pudding is one of the best comfort foods! The recipe is extremely easy, fairly quick and can be found here. Try adding shaved chocolate, fresh cinnamon or bananas to yours.

Aguas Aguas Aguas!
Strawberry Lemonade from the first and only lemons I have found so far!

As was predicted, I am missing some of my regular foods and spices: pumpkins, curry powder, purple cabbage, and eggplant to name a few. However, I am having fun playing with the ingredients I do have available and my favorite so far is dried Jamaica (a particular type of hibiscus flower).
They are available in the states, but not as cheaply or abundantly.
I made Agua de Jamaica as well as Járabe de Jamaica, which
is basically sweet hibiscus syrup.
ahhhmazing

Agua de Jamaica - more refreshing than any juice I've ever had at home

Aguas here are basically watered down fresh fruit juices. They have plenty of fruit and sugar, but the addition of water cuts through the syrupy sweetness of juices that are more familiar to us. Incredibly refreshing and invigorating, aguas are a great way to tone down all the spicy and greasy food down here! In my opinion, they're far superior to fruit juices.

Next up: Agua de sandía (watermelon) to go with my lemon scones..how do you say scone in español??

Feed me Tortillas has pushed me into two things I never ever thought I would do and that I never thought I would ENJOY doing. All in one day, I began to decipher and alter HTML code to make this site look the way I want AND I had to help Nathan make a stop-motion film. It took a looong time, over 500 photos and all the patience I could muster - and I'm not a patient person.

So this is us transforming the title for this site - Feed Me Tortillas
I would like to thank a very special chicken, Nathan for his brilliant ideas and the tortillería down by the mercado who supplies us with the MOST amazing flour tortillas I have ever eaten. Seriously guys, you've never had a tortilla until you've had these..

Enjoy!
